WATCH: Rhodes College chaplain planned to host unsanctioned BDSM workshop but school doesn't consent
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A brewing controversy on the campus of Rhodes College.
Students got news of the school's chaplain — Rev. Beatrix Weil — hosting a BDSM workshop.
BDSM is an acronym for bondage, discipline (or domination), sadism and masochism.
It's an umbrella term for certain kinds of erotic behavior between consenting adults.
Rev. Beatrix Weil, Rhodes College Chaplain
FOX13 got our hands on the invitation.
According to it, the BDSM 101 workshop was to take place on the campus' Burrow Hall.
It read: "Chaplain Beatrix will host a local dominatrix to share wisdom on how to safely, sanely and consensually learn about bondage, discipline-domination, sadism-submission and masochism. There will be an opportunity to ask questions anonymously."
FOX13 reached out to Rhodes College and received the following statement:
"Thank you for checking with us. The proposed event was cancelled Friday as soon as it came to our attention. It was not a college-sanctioned event. No such event is planned for our campus."
“I think it is absolutely ridiculous," Rhodes College student Coleman Clay said in response to the class. "I don’t think anything sexual like that or any seminar like that should be held on a college campus. Even though this is a private school and they can get away with it, I don’t think that that belongs here, especially at Rhodes where I go. I’m not proud of it."
Phillis Lewis heads up the Love Doesn't Hurt, a nonprofit that advocates for domestic violence victims.
She said included in the organization's services is defining what consent means.
The nonprofit even go so far as to teach BDSM classes.
"There’s so much stigma around it because a lot of people when they hear BDSM or kink they’re automatically assuming that it has something to do with impact and that’s just a piece of it," Lewis said. "The piece to a 200-piece puzzle, the kink spectrum is so broad that a lot of people see as kinky is like wearing lingerie, doing a strip tease for your partner, doing a sensual massage for your partner."
FOX13 reached out to Chaplain Beatrix but did not hear back.
