Chile’s environmental watchdog (SMA) has requested an environmental impact assessment from operator WOM regarding the installation of seven 5G antennas in Hualpén and Contulmo, Biobío region.
SMA started the process after a complaint by Hualpén municipality, claiming the antennas were set up without municipal or environmental authorizations in the Hualpén peninsula nature sanctuary. WOM also started setting up antennas in the Lanalhue lake tourist zone, among others. 5g Cellular Signal Receiver Antenna
SMA demands an assessment of archeological, avifauna and landscape impacts.
WOM’s 5G implementation is facing delays. In November, the company said in a statement that “the vast majority of the sites entered by WOM are pending resolution by [regulator] Subtel in various administrative processes, whether due to situations of force majeure, insistence on rejections, among others.”
Earlier this year, WOM requested the extension of the deadline to complete phase 1 of the project but was rejected by Subtel.
In mid-July, Subtel reported WOM complied with 70% of deployment in the 3.5GHz band, 81% in the AWS band and 46% in the 700MHz band.
A month earlier, WOM announced that it had 3,950 5G antennas installed throughout the country, which represents around 80% of the total it promised to deploy in 2021 as part of the obligations associated with the spectrum auction.
