Classic San Francisco Italian Restaurant Gold Mirror Is Closing for a Remodel - Eater SF

Gold Mirror on Taraval Street will go dark on January 1 for a facelift

Diners on Taraval Street will have one less option for wood-fired pizza and tuna tartare at the top of the year. That’s because long-running Italian restaurant Gold Mirror will temporarily close for a remodel as of January 1. General manager Francesca Villani wrote to Eater SF to share that the 54-year-old restaurant will get a facelift, giving chefs Domenico and Roberto Di Grande a chance to untie their aprons. According to the restaurant’s website, the business originally opened in 1929 as a New Orleans-style speakeasy. Then the Di Grande family moved from Augusta, Sicily to San Francisco and purchased the restaurant in 1969. A convoy of dishes — eggplant Parmigiana, rigatoni Bolognese, affumicato pies — came with the Di Grandes, alongside a big and bold, borderline over-the-top ambiance. In 2004 the restaurant closed for repairs when a runaway delivery truck blew through the front of the restaurant. Thankfully, this closure is far more intentional.

The Peninsula just got a new destination for Hong Kong-style noodles and well-made cocktails. The Peninsula Foodist reports Christian Conte, who owns Drakes San Carlos, transformed the former San Carlos Bar & Grill space into SC Noodle House. The restaurant’s noodle options run the gamut from cold vermicelli riffs to classic pho, and even a 10-pound noodle challenge.

The Mercury News reports another new business, this one in Contra Costa County. Boba Birds opened at the end of November from owner Daniel Zhang, who was born and raised in Pinole. The shop serves numerous chicken items including five spice wings and popcorn chicken. Naturally, there’s boba, too.

Tiger’s Taproom, an Oakland craft beer go-to, suffered an electrical fire over the weekend. On Instagram, ownership wrote a bathroom flame was discovered two hours before the bar’s annual bingo event. One bathroom needs light work, the post reads, but the other is burnt to a crisp. The business will be open and operable as soon as at least one bathroom is operational.
