A ramble about avoiding overpaying for printer repair, as well as the frustrating journey of attempting to fix it on my own.

My family and I were no exception, having experienced the frustration of using a printer that failed on us after just a year or so. My brother would spend hours troubleshooting, either eventually giving up or miraculously restoring it to its former functionality. However, this was only a temporary fix, as the printer would require another rescue mission after several months.
So, when we acquired a family printer that managed to last for over 5 years and still function flawlessly, I couldn’t have been happier. Admittedly, it could be temperamental at times, especially when the printer driver caused my artwork to print off-centre or with a faded colour. Nevertheless, it continued to effectively perform its primary function of printing. This is more than can be said for many household printers these days, as they either fail to print altogether or struggle to feed paper from the tray, making it challenging to remain functional.
The reliable printer we own is a Brother model, the MFC-J470DW. Encased in a typical black chassis, it features a small LED screen for viewing ink levels and navigating the menu. Additionally, it includes a functional built-in scanner, making it the ideal household printer — when it’s functioning properly.
Before you criticise me about Brother machines being money-suckers, let me explain. It’s no secret that printing companies often sell their machines at a lower cost to compensate for the exorbitantly-priced cartridges they market.
