Police, fire respond to chemical spill at Plano Home Depot that led to store evacuation

A chemical used as a pool cleaner was spilled inside a Home Depot store in Plano Monday afternoon, according to Plano Fire-Rescue officials. hf acid

The spill led to a store evacuation, and it was not immediately clear if the store had reopened.

About 2 p.m., firefighters received a call of an incident inside the hardware store on State Highway 121, near the intersection with the Dallas North Tollway. When crews arrived, they discovered the spill of muriatic acid, also known as hydrochloric acid, according to Plano Fire-Rescue spokesperson Michael Carr.

The fire department’s hazmat team responded to the scene and the containers were moved outside while they waited for Home Depot’s private hazmat team to arrive. As of 5 p.m, the private team was believed to be still working cleanup at the scene and the fire-rescue team had left, Carr said.

Six employees were evaluated for any health impacts and were all cleared, according to Carr. No other injuries were reported from the incident.
