Arguably, there is no other piece in a wardrobe as versatile as leather leggings. While some may say, “What about the white tee? A timeless, fitted blazer?” to them, I say: What other garment can go from having rock-and-roll sex appeal to any regular, old Tuesday at the office? Dressed up or down, paired with a sneaker or a pointed-toe mule, the pleather legging remains the same: Alluring and ageless. Tops
“Faux leather pants are a timeless staple because the look will never change drastically from season to season and can be styled in many different ways,” celebrity stylist Ebony Brown tells InStyle, noting the importance of faux leather when completing a capsule closet. “My advice would be to invest in a style you love so you’ll wear them often.”
There’s more to a simple black legging than one might think, though. From materials to cuts to added detailing, the marketplace is saturated with this closet staple. Don’t fret; we asked experts for their favorite faux leather leggings and even tested a bunch ourselves in order to provide you with the most compressive list out there. Ahead, shop expert recommendations for the best faux leather leggings of 2023.
What We Love: They’re 2-in-1 shapewear and stylish pants.
What We Don't Love: They run a bit small.
Spanx can do no wrong, especially with these pants made of nylon, elastane, and spandex blend. But don’t let the faux label fool you — these feel heavy like natural leather, meaning they don’t turn sheer or appear see-through. These shiny high-rise pants are compressing but also super smooth and breathable. They have typical shapewear properties — like making your backside look good — but not constricting, so you are still able to move in them. Because they are shapewear-esque, they run a bit small because they’re tighter than most. We recommend sizing up if you don’t want as much compression. Otherwise, they offer the right amount of control and functionality. Not to mention, they’re low-maintenance with washes. (Just throw ‘em in a machine on cold, and you’re ready for another wear.) They also offer short, regular, and tall sizes, checking all our boxes for the top spot on our list.
“The faux leather finish adds a trendy texture, while Spanx's shaping technology provides a flattering fit,” says Alicia Lloyd, styling supervisor at Stitch Fix. “The leggings offer versatility for both casual and dressed-up looks, making them a wardrobe staple that accentuates the figure and boosts confidence.”

What We Love: The quality, fit, and style look more expensive than they are.
What We Don’t Love: Some have found these can appear see-through.
For a budget-friendly option that still looks expensive and feels high quality, these faux leather leggings from ASOS are your best bet. With a high-rise, elasticized waistband, matte finish, and a snug fit, these leggings may not have any frills, but they do check all the necessary boxes.
They’re stretchy while contouring your waist and booty while a “wet look” finish feels expensive and fashionable. Do note that some found these to be see-through, so we suggest pairing with black or skin-colored underwear to avoid any mishaps. We probably wouldn’t wear them to the gym, so we’re not too concerned about the squat test.

What We Love: The futuristic embossed detailing elevates the classic legging.
What We Don’t Love: The bikini bottom etching at the front can draws attention to your crotch, which might be uncomfortable for some.
“If there was ever a case to blow half of your rent on must-have leggings, this is it,” says fashion stylist and TV personality Cindy Conroy. “Mugler’s Debossed design is futuristic yet modern and approachable.”
Crafted in Portugal, these faux patent leggings feature a paneled construction, a high-rise, and a logo embossed at the front and back (because if you’re gonna spend that much, you want people to know what’s up!). While we love the unique embossing detail, the bikini bottom etching on the crotch might make some more conservative wearers uncomfortable.
“Wear them with a longline blazer or crisp white poplin and they are office-appropriate,” suggests Conroy. “Versatile enough to be worn on weekends and weekdays, they are your new wardrobe workhorse.”

What We Love: They aren’t see-through — even the white option is full coverage.
What We Don’t Love: Some wish the fabric was thicker.
These four-way stretch, high-waisted faux leather leggings come in eight full-coverage colors that never fade. Lifestyle Influencer and Beauty Writer Katya Bychkova appreciates that “they offer less compression, which makes them more comfortable for everyday wear,” she tells InStyle. “They feature a shiny, grainy texture to look more like genuine leather and could pass for skinny leather pants.” And InStyle senior commerce editor Chloe Anello swears by them, too, because they never roll down or weirdly gap at the ankles — a feat for a taller woman, like herself. They’re similar to Spanx, but according to Anello, they hold up a little better and have a more natural-looking faux leather, though they are a bit thinner than some expected. Plus, they have a much better size range.

What We Love: They look high fashion and sleek enough to wear in and out of the gym.
What We Don’t Love: There are no tall or petite options.
These faux leather workout leggings have a major cult following and for good reason. Not only are they sleek, elegant, and sexy, they’re made from a full coverage fabric with four-way stretch, allowing you to easily move through high-intensity workouts. The high-rise and wide waistband ensures you’re supported without feeling constricting, while the full length and glossy liquid finish feels high-end and perfect for nights out.
Pair with a matching sports bra for a monochromatic, off-duty model vibe during pilates, yoga, spin, or HIIT class. Then switch out the bra for a simple white tee, blazer, or bomber jacket, and swap the sneakers for boots and you’ve got a fierce date night outfit.
We love that it comes in four staple colorways to suit your style, for a variety of transitional workout looks from the gym, to the office, to the bar. We don’t love that they don’t come in tall or petite sizes, though they do offer XXS-XXL.

What We Love: This faux leather is lightweight and breathable, so you won’t be sweaty and overheating.
What We Don’t Love: They need to be dry cleaned.
“These leggings combine edgy style with ease of wear,” says Lloyd. “The leather finish adds a bold touch, while the pull-on design ensures comfort. With the signature Good Waist fit, these pants offer a flattering silhouette.”
Made from buttery soft, matte faux leather, these size-inclusive leggings are straightforward and have plenty of stretch to keep you comfortable for all day wear. Plus, they let the booty do all the talking with a simple seam down the center and no other distractions.
They feature a high-rise and an elastic waistband with a smooth finish. Customers rave about their fit and support; they’ll keep you snatched without creating discomfort or rolling down. We don’t love that they need to be dry cleaned, which is kind of a pain for leggings. However, we love the fit and support so much, we’re willing to do a dry clean run for them.

What We Love: The patent leather finish adds a touch of glam to any outfit.
What We Don’t Love: They can squeak as you walk, and there may be color transfer.
Spanx is just so good at faux leather leggings, they had to make our list twice. With a tall inseam though sizes XS-1X, these height-inclusive leggings feature a high shine faux patent leather finish that is glamorous, bold, and ready to make a statement. Lloyd loves how these sculpt the body with their hidden core shaping technology. Plus, these hit at the natural waist for optimal coverage and are free of a center seam for a seamless fit. However, like many of Spanx’s styles, these do run a bit small, so be mindful of this when shopping. The brand does state that they will stretch and form to your body, so if you prefer a snugger fit, don’t be alarmed by the initial shimmy it takes to get these bad boys on.
Do be mindful that you might be squeaking as you move around (like all patent leather). To avoid this, you can simply apply lotion or oil to the leggings’ inner thigh. Also, note that color may transfer onto other materials or surfaces, so wash with like colors and try not to have prolonged contact with light-colored clothing and surfaces, like a white purse.

What We Love: It comes in six patent faux leather colors for a bold, high-shine ensemble.
What We Don’t Love: Only 1X -3X have a side seam for shaping.
Not every legging is offered in petite sizes, so we love how Commando makes these in a petite inseam from XS to XL. Conroy suggests this style because they bring “sculpted excellence” to any look. With a high shine and a raw cut hem, these are for the glamorous that want to make a statement.
“With four-way stretch and a high waist that’s flattering for every shape, the leggings have a beautiful wet sheen,” says Conroy. “They’re literally dripping with personality.” Pair with a band tee and black blazer for a rock and roll vibe or a sexy red top and boots for a night on the town.
These leggings feel a bit tight at first, but they do stretch and form to your body with time. We suggest going with your usual size and doing a couple of squats to get them loosened up.

What We Love: Finally, a pair of leather leggings with pockets.
What We Don’t Love: The fabric is thinner than expected.
These shiny, metallic-style faux leather pants are anything but basic. With a crossover waistband detail that snatches your waist and defines your midsection, these look amazing on all body types. And the real game changer — they actually include two side pockets, which is rare among leather leggings.
While faux leather may not seem like the most breathable fabric, Halara’s Cloudful version is sweat-wicking, breathable, and stretchy in four directions. Plus it sculpts your legs and lifts your booty. Reviewers do say the fabric felt a little thinner than expected, but it still wasn’t see-through. Whether you work out in them or go out in them, they have you covered in all directions. Styling tip: Snag the midnight blue colorway for a fun deviation from classic black.

What We Love: They are size and height-inclusive with nine gorgeous colors to choose from.
What We Don’t Love: They run super small.
If you’re the type of shopper that finds a beloved garment and buys them in every color, today’s your lucky day. These gorgeous high-waisted, faux leather leggings come in nine different neutral shades that pair perfectly with all kinds of colors.
With fabric originating from Japan, these stretchy pants have incredible shape retention, so they won’t sag or bag. They’re also size and height-inclusive with sizes 2XS-2XL, with options for petites and tall wearers.
Do note that they run small, so you may need to size up one or two sizes. You may want to order multiple sizes to find the right fit, and then simply return the unwanted sizes. Thankfully, Aritzia does offer free shipping and returns on all orders.

What We Love: These smoothing and shape your lower half.
What We Don’t Love: There’s a weird smell when they come out of the package.
We received these leggings as a press sample and have first-hand experience with how amazing these look, especially when you have a bit of booty. The waistband accentuates our hourglass figure while the curved back lifts the cheeks. The four-way stretch fabric offers compression without restriction, so we can easily move throughout your day without feeling uncomfortable or awkward. We also love the zipper at the ankle for a dose of rocker vibes.
These leggings do run slightly large, and there was a pretty intense smell when they first came out of the package. After a quick wash the smell was gone, thankfully!

What We Love: The flare bottoms help to create an hourglass figure.
What We Don’t Love: They run long.
With a high-rise elasticized waist and flared hem, these moderately stretchy faux leather pants put in the work, especially for those who want to balance out their curves. A flare hemline creates balance and proportion, creating harmony for wider hips and thighs.
A flare style also elongates the leg, a plus for anyone that wants to look taller. We love that these are affordable, especially when compared to others on our list, yet feel high quality and look expensive. Do note they run long, so if you’re over 5’9" they will fit just right. If you’re under 5’9", you will need to hem them or pair with heeled shoes.

What We Love: This is a stylish option for expecting mothers.
What We Don't Love: They’re a thicker material, so they might be better for the colder months.
On the hunt for a legging that has ultimate stretch, and you’re expecting? These Madewell Leggings are your ideal pick. They’re grainy, matte maternity leggings with a bit of sheen but nothing distracting. They are sleek enough for work but incredibly cozy, giving a little extra something without sacrificing functionality. They won't budge or roll in after a long day —- and they also don’t come up too high on the belly, so nothing about them feels restricting to the body.

What We Love: They are maternity-friendly.
What We Don’t Love: They run large.
Lloyd recommends The Harrington Legging as they blend “elegance and functionality.” The ⅞ length makes them ideal for tucking into boots or pairing with a statement heel.
“Designed with a premium fabric, they offer a polished appearance and all-day comfort,” Lloyd says. “The leggings' versatile style effortlessly transitions from work to social settings, making them a luxurious investment for those seeking sophistication and flexibility in their wardrobe. You will get so much wear out of these that it will be worth the investment!”
The Harrington leggings feature a high-rise waistband, back pocket, and brown or black options in sizes 00-18. Do note many say they run large, so plan accordingly when shopping. The perk is that they are midsection friendly, a benefit whether you’re growing a baby bump or carry weight in your middle.

What We Love: The olive colorway is a fun way to embrace fall’s earthy tones.
What We Don’t Love: The long inseam may not be petite-friendly.
“Alice + Olivia’s Pompey vegan leather pants are your ticket to looking like a snack,” says Conroy. “Embracing a dramatic olive palette, they usher in fall expertly. I’m in love with the front pleats, high-waist, and side pockets that accompany that pretty color pop.”
While you may not feel comfortable wearing true leggings to work, these trousers certainly are office-friendly. We love that they can easily be dressed up or down with a simple white tank or a blazer and heels. With a 34.5-inch inseam, these are quite long, and may drag on the floor if you’re shorter.
Price at the time of publish: $375

What We Love: The buttery soft suede texture looks more expensive than it is.
What We Don’t Love: There are no tall or petite sizes available.
Suede adds so much elegance, sophistication, and luxury to any outfit. With a buttery soft texture, elastane for comfy stretch, and high-rise, wide waistband, these leggings let you lounge in style.
“I recommend this pair for our clients who are looking for luxurious texture and ethical materials,” says Lloyd. “Crafted from vegan suede, they offer a sophisticated look without compromising values. The leggings' versatility and softness make them a stylish option for various occasions, ensuring both fashion-forward appeal and a cruelty-free choice.”
While traditional suede pants can typically cost a pretty penny, we love that these look more expensive than they are. And, unlike their animal suede counterpart, you can wash these at home. Just be sure to use cold water, so you don’t damage the material or shrink them. Again, we wish there was a wider size range, including tall and petite inseams.

Quality faux leather will have a deep, grainy texture but feel soft like genuine leather. But regardless of the texture — whether you prefer a patent (like Commando Faux Patent), a matte finish (like Good American Good Waist Faux Leather Leggings), or something in between like Spanx Faux Leather Leggings— it should feel sleek and ultra-smooth on the body because it will most likely be lined.
If you’re looking for faux leather leggings that move with the body or are made for workouts, look for a four-way stretch label. Brands like Commando, Spanx, and Alo have high-stretch fabrics and a spandex-y feel that move with your body. They also offer high-waist bands great for movement. With its breathable, four-way stretch material, Carbon38 Legging in Takara Shine is our pick for Best Workout.
Most faux leather leggings that made our list have a high-waist or mid-rise, which we love as the higher rise helps to create the illusion of longer legs. The extra coverage also can help smooth your middle, especially in a shaping style like Yummie Faux Leather Shaping Legging with Side Zip.
The reason to invest in a pair of faux leather leggings or pants? You can style them any way you feel like. “The styling possibilities are endless,” says celebrity stylist and costume designer Ebony Brown. Her favorite is a faux leather trouser styled with a cropped top and an oversized blazer, à la workwear casual. But if you’re looking for something edgier, Brown says go for a ‘90s vintage t-shirt and faux leather joggers. “This is a cute street style moment for my clients, usually paired with high-heeled boots or sneakers, depending on the mood,” says Brown.
As always, wear what makes you comfortable, but if you’re looking for an editor-approved look or a stylist’s recommendation, the experts think that faux leather leggings look their best with boots. “Tall boots and platform boots can elevate the look,” says Brown. But for something more casual, a sleek pair of white sneakers will do the trick.
You’re lucky: Vegan and faux leather are much easier to clean than genuine leather. Removal of stains can be done with warm water and a microfiber cloth. As for a full scrub down, you may want to check if your pleather pieces are machine washed. Most pieces don’t come with the drab of dry-cleaning; Some can be thrown right into the washing machine on cold. For pairs that can’t, hand scrub in cool water with a gentle cleanser until no suds remain. Turn inside out and repeat. Ensure no excessive detergent is left, as this can cause it to stiffen and crack. Then finally, air dry.
